Threepenny Ceremony

The threepenny ceremony took place on 29th February 2024 and it involves the Kings Scholars lining up to collect their annual traditional 3d piece from the College Provost. This tradition known as Threepenny Day is 400 years old. Originally the Provost received 2s 8d, other members of staff 1s 4d and less depending on status. Scholars and choristers received 1d each. The scholars still received the one penny in a three penny pieces, the other twopence being from the gift of Provost Bost who succeeded Lupton. With the introduction of decimal coinage in 1972, and the abolition of the threepenny piece, Provost Caccia bought up large stocks of redundant coin to ensure continuation of this custom.
